Location

On Chippewa Creek Drive just south of State Rt. 82. Enter Brecksville Reservation via the Rt. 82 park entrance to see the prairie .


Owner

The Brecksville Prairie is owned and managed by Cleveland Metroparks.

Prairie History

This prairie was created by David Dvorak and Cleveland Metroparks a number of years ago, using tallgrass prairie seeds collected primarily at the Castalia Prairie (with proper authorizations). Consequently, the grasses and forbs bloom and grow here in conformance with the Castalia Prairie latitude, directly to the west.

The Brecksville Prairie is approximately 4 acres.

Prairie Description

The because it was planted using Ohio prairie seeds, from the same latitude in Erie County, this prairie blooms and grows at proper periods.

More importantly, it has a fine diversity of both tallgrasses and Ohio prairie forbs (wildflowers), with over 50 native species, including Ohio Spiderwort, Sullivant's Milkweed, Swamp Thistle, Giant Sunflower, Dense Blazingstar, Swamp Milkweed, Autumn Sneezeweed, and Prairie Cordgrass.


Visitation Information

Parking is immediately adjacent. Access trails course through the prairie.

Collecting of seeds or plants from the site is strictly prohibited.
